A patient's oral welfare and much of their total well-being, is in the dentists hands. Because they are skilled, conscientious professionals, dentists earn the respect and appreciation of their patients and fellow citizens. They have opportunities to work as community leaders, educators, physicians and government officials with IDA.

As IDA members we invest in the advancement of dentistry and the oral health of the public. Together, we support the profession, educate the public and advocate for health care that works.

Significance of Oral health

Quality of life can be affected by oral health and diseases. The most basic human needs, including the ability to eat and drink, swallow, maintain proper nutrition, smile and communicate is dependent on oral health. We realise that not only the quality of life, but it also affects self- esteem, performance at school or work. In a nutshell, oral health is an essential component of health throughout life.

IDA's public (community) health initiatives are aimed at improving oral health. But the grim reality in India is that, 95% of the population suffers from gum disease, only 50% use a toothbrush and just 2% of the population visit the dentist.

Therefore, we at IDA are driven by our vision to improve oral health and quality of life for all by 2020 through `optimal national oral health' programme. We realize that dental health of the community can be attained by organised efforts to prevent oral disease, promote oral health and improve the quality of life.

Therefore IDA's community health initiatives and events are aimed at prevention, early intervention, rehabilitation and in addition direct treatment of dental and oral diseases.

Community oral Health

Community oral health are structured interventions that give communities greater control over their health conditions. It’s the science of preventing and controlling oral diseases and promoting oral health through organized efforts. As a member be our strength.

The focus is on the community rather than the individual. Dental public health professionals work to promote oral health through education; research; dental epidemiology (prevention and control of a dental disease); policy, programme and service development and implementation.

This involves working in partnership with a number of key stakeholders including regional boards, community organizations, professional associations, educational institutions, unions, consumers and other government departments.

Peer Review

Advancing the Dentist-patient relationship

IDA offers a mediation and peer review service to the public as a means of amicably settling disputes between patients and their dentists. The advantage for the profession is that through this process the patients and dentists are able to discuss their perceptions of a situation with the aid of an unbiased third party without the expense of an attorney or the need to seek relief from courts.

The proceedings and outcome of all mediation and peer review cases are strictly confidential. Participation in this process is voluntary and free to all.

Population residing in rural India lack oral health awareness, income, transportation and access to treatment. Therefore they are more prone to tooth decay or gum diseases.

Large segment of the rural adult population is toothless due to the crippling nature of the dental diseases and about 40 % of the children suffer from malaligned teeth and jaws affecting proper functioning.

Muskan - Rural Oral Health Programme

Muskan - Rural Oral Health Programme is aimed at rural India. This programme introduces preventive, interceptive, curative and educational oral health care into the existing system. Dentist/population ratio in the rural areas is dismally low are the findings of IDA's national workshop on "Strategic evaluation and future planning for dental personnel resource development & oral health planning" conducted in 2005.

The workshop revealed that distribution of dentist: population at 2% dentists available for 72% of rural population. In comparison 98% of dentist are available for 18% of population in urban areas. A matter of serious concern as 72% of population in India resides in rural and 28% in urban areas.

Further the workshop stated, that there areno dental surgeons posted at the level of CHC (4,276 community health centres) and PHC (23,458 primary health centres) in most states. There is an acute shortage of equipment, material and other essential facilities to run curative services for rural India. People in rural India lack oral health awareness, income, transportation and have no access to treatment.

The result is that 80% of the children and 60% of the adults suffer from dental caries, more than 90% of adult community after the age of 30 years suffer from periodontal diseases which also has its inception in childhood. In addition, 40% of all body cancers are oral cancers. Large segment of the rural adult population is toothless due to the crippling nature of the dental diseases and about 40 % of the children suffer from malaligned teeth and jaws affecting proper functioning.

In view of these facts, Muskan- Rural Health Programme is vital in our commitment for "optimal oral health for all " by 2020. Under this programmes IDA introduced mobile dental clinics (on- vans) to deliver care through free-dental camps. Besides this, Anganwadi and health workers are trained and educated about various dental diseases through practical illustrations.

This is being done because IDA realises that chronic oral infections can lead to heart and lung diseases, diabetes and stroke, premature births and low birth weights. Oral health is important to general health and well-being as well as quality of life.

Oral Health Month

Oral Health Month (OHM) aims at raising public awareness about oral hygiene and tackling important issues such as tooth decay and cavities, plaque, tartar, bruxium, gum disease, wisdom teeth issues, dry mouth and bad breath. It aims to help people understand the cause, symptoms and conditions of dental problems as well as ways to improve poor habits. It was initiated in 2004, by the Indian Dental Association and Colgate.

Mumbai Smiles

Mumbai Smiles is IDA's initiative in partnership with Wrigley’s Orbit to spread awareness about oral health, hygiene and improve access to oral health care for the common-man. Driving the importance of oral health, ‘Mumbai Smiles’ is an initiative which offers free dental check- ups and educate families on the need to go for regular dental check- ups to ensure a good overall health.

Mumbai Smiles not only generates awareness but further reiterates IDA's commitment towards oral health.

IDA also made Mumbai proud by breaking the Guinness World Record by conducting the largest number of dental check ups in 24 hours.

Brush Up Challenge

Brush Up Challenge campaign was started to adopt good oral care habits as many people are not aware of the right techniques to brush. Some people use finger instead of a brush, black tooth powder, tobacco preparations, herbal twigs, etc.

IDA in association with Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited undertakes various innovative activities to promote oral healthcare. In October 2007, a record number of 177,003 people brushed their teeth simultaneously at 380 locations across India, in one day, at one time. Thereby successfully creating a Guinness World Record in India for ‘most people brushing their teeth (multiple venue)’.

Smile Contest

Smile Contest reflects healthy teeth. IDA spearheads the cause of oral health via Smile Contest. We strive to create an environment towards oral health care and reiterate our social commitment to serve the community by diffusing the knowledge of complete oral healthcare to the masses by holding Smile Contest.

Smile Contest aims to highlight the important aspects of oral hygiene and the salient features of preventive dentistry in its efforts to change the outlook of the common man towards dentistry and oral healthcare. Creates awareness that simple dental care habits, such as brushing and flossing results in a perfect smile.

And a perfect smile reflects your personality, self-esteem and is fundamental for your success. Smile is the quality that elevates people's health and lives. Therefore, IDA organises Smile Contest at schools for various groups and emphasizes the importance of good teeth and oral hygiene.

Live. Learn. Laugh. programme

Live. Learn. Laugh. programme was unveiled in 2006, as a drive for behavioral change and inculcate good oral habits and night brushing in children. Low-income families received oral health education on importance of `tooth-brushing day and night’.

Free dental screenings was carried out as many do not have access to dentist on a regular basis.

The project is supported by the Federation Dentaire Internationale (FDI), Unilever’s Pepsodent brand and IDA.

School Dental Programme

IDA's School Dental Programme imparts awareness about good oral habits at schools targeted at children in the age-groups between 9 to 14 years. The focus is on inculcating proper oral health behavior to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Under the IDA's School Dental Programme activities such as free dental check-ups, distribution of samples of toothpaste and toothbrushes as well as educational leaflets and posters and large- scale community- based oral health camps are organized.

Teachers Training Programme

Training teachers is the most effective and practical solution for imparting oral health education because children obey teachers. Studies, by the Association found that dental diseases have been increasing both in prevalence and severity over the last few decades. There is, therefore, an urgent need for prevention through primary education.

The challenge is for oral health education information to be made available and taken into practice at every home/family and community. Teachers here have an important role in promoting/improving the oral health of millions of school children, adolescents and adults by communicating information.

IDA's training programme for teachers is conducted by a dental surgeon. The programme curriculum comprises of lectures, slide presentation, demonstration of correct brushing techniques, interactive sessions and distribution of informative booklets.

Parents Awareness Programme

IDA targets parents for oral health education programmes, as they are a child's first teacher in life and play a significant role in maintaining overall oral health. Maintenance of good oral hygiene through regular brushing and dental care for both parent and child will improve oral health and help reduce the risk of spreading decay- causing bacteria. Dental decay is a transmissible bacterial disease, therefore parents should not only receive regular dental care but should be made aware about the risk of sharing toothbrushes with their children.

They must limit sugar intake of their children as its frequency and exposure increases the tooth decay. We remind parents that their children learn good oral health habits by watching them or through supervised brushing.

IDA's parents awareness programme imparts oral health education at the cradle stage by educating the parents via lecture and demonstration, audio visual presentations about oral health. We generate the knowledge that the child's oral health is linked to overall health.
